Preface

Women's studies have attracted the attention of many social and biological scientists. The abundance of literature on women's life has helped mainstream societies to understand many dimensions of women's life. However, this has also resulted in the creation of many myths surrounding women and their capabilities. Amidst these myths and realities, many critical dimensions of women's life remained largely unexplored. And unfortunately, women's entry into robust professional life police has remained unattained till very late. Patriarchy is strong in Indian society and centred around women's lives inside the house. A large segment of scholars, including administrators and social workers, presented several writings about women's life. Many among such authors emphasised that the entry of women into the police profession is recent; however, the cultural and normative prescriptions are still against them. The police profession is considered a masculine profession all over the world. Men dominate the police profession. Therefore, women who happen to be there in the profession face discrimination and suffer because of their feminine identity. A conceptual framework of women's role and social perception in the police profession has been presented in the introductory chapter. A broader framework has been developed for studying women in the police profession.

Further, a review of available work with references has been delineated in the second chapter. The assessment is critically assessed to develop the scope of the present study. The studies are reviewed under different segments so that the specificity of the work can be pointed out. Methodological details of the work have been delineated in the third chapter. Methodological details include the objectives, tools, and techniques used for the data collection. Field experiences during the interview process are also shared in this chapter.
