Back of the Book

Would King Dasharatha even have his coveted sons were it not for the sacrifice of his daughter Shanta?

Was Manthara an evil, conniving handmaid to the queen, or a loving mother who tried to protect her ward from palace intrigues?

How did Meenakshi of the beautiful eyes transform into the embodiment of ugliness and immoral lust? In an epic that revolves around the life of a righteous prince, what role do the women play? As bestselling author Anand Neelakantan peels back the layers of Valmiki’s timeless saga, these stories of ambition, love, devotion and courage shine through, inviting readers to look at the women anew. Lovers, sisters, wives and mothers who hold a complex epic together-these are the women of Valmiki’s Ramayana.

Devi- Tales of Women From The Ramayana
Back of the Book
Did Sita have a duplicate who was abducted by Ravana? Did Rama have a sister? WasKaikeyi genuinely a cruel and obstinate stepmother? How did Vedavati avenge herhumiliation in the guise of Sita?Women play an integral role in Indian mythology, and the Ramayana is no exception.Whether it be popular ones such as Sita and Mandodari or obscure ones such as Sulochanaand Shanta, these phenomenal female characters have been constantly attempting to bringabout a transformation in the status of women in the contemporary era through their distinctand unusual ways. Time and again, the Ramayana has been executing the pedagogicalmethod of preaching us on something through its antithesis. For instance, esteem and regardfor women are taught via Ravana, who disrespects and molests women. With their rock-strong grit, indefatigable qualities, and innate charisma, these femalecharacters are teaching women to be more than just good wives and daughters-in-law throughantithetical means. They are teaching us that within each woman resides the Goddess (Devi)and to attain Saraswati (wisdom), Lakshmi (wealth), and Shakti (authority) one has to firstrespect women who are indeed manifestations of these divine female entities. So fastenyourself and let this title bring forward the folk variants and retellings of the stories of thesephenomenal women into mainstream narration for you.

Women of Ramayan- The Untold Stories

About the Author

Kunal Kaushal is a student of Indian history. He believes that mythology is simply an extension of history into the times of which we cannot be certain. He tries to reimagine the events detailed in various epics and scriptures by removing the cloaks of exaggeration that have got added over many millennia.

To him, human emotions and the drivers of human endeavors have not changed much in past 4,000 years. So, on careful look, one can see shades of historical and mythical characters in any generation.

He has degrees of B.Tech. from IIT Roorkee (India) and MBA from UNC Chapel Hill (US). His day job is architecting technology solutions for one of the largest asset managers in the world.
