About the Book
The Tales in this Collection, 43 in number, have mostly appeared before in the Indian Antiquary, Vols. IX. to XII., in the Calcutta Review for 1882, October Number and in the Legends of the Punjab, Vol. I., pp. 1-66, but they differ from their former shape, in so far they are now presented in purely literary form, whereas previously the object aimed at was to give them in a strict translation, however uncouth to English ears. A few of the Tales, however, are new and have never been before published anywhere.
About the Authors
FA Steel (1847-1929) was an English writer who was noted for writing books set in British India or otherwise connected to it. She was born Flora Annie Webster in Sudbury, Middlesex. In 1867 she married Henry William Steel, a member of the Indian Civil Service, and for the next 22 years lived in India, chiefly in the Punjab, with which most of her books are connected. She grew deeply interested in native Indian lives and began the urge educational reforms on the Government of India.

Richard Temple the author of a large number of books on India and joint editor of the world famous "Indian Antiquary" has compiled a journal of his many visits and says in Hyderabad, Kashmir, Sikkim and Nepal in these two volumes. His long stay in Hyderabad as resident gave him an ample opportunity to study the politics, administration and history of the dominions of Hyderabad state which is not found in any other contemporary work. His journal which he kept in Jammu & Kashmir gives us not only a deep, comprehensive and contemporary accounts of the exceedingly complicated geography and history of the mountain territories of this state but its administration, the ancient, medieval and modern history and its mineral wealth.
