Maharshi Vitthal Ramji Shinde (1873-1944) was a great crusador against the evil of untouchability. First he came under the influence of M. G. Ranade and R. G. Bhandarkar and became a "Prarthana Samajist." Later the biography of Keshab Chandra Sen influenced him to become a Brahmo Samajist. He became the General Secretary of Indian Depressed Classes Mission when it was established in October 1906. He was also active in the All India Congress Committee and was the first man to move a resolution against untouchability.
Dr. G. M. Pawar (b. 1932) is a well-known critic and research scholar. He has undertaken extensive studies and research on the life and times of V. R. Shinde. Two of his monographs on V. R. Shinde have been published and he has edited four books apart from writing many articles. He retired as Professor and Head of the Dept. of Marathi, Shivaji University, Kolhapur.
Dr. Maya Pandit, the translator of this book, teaches English Literature and Linguistics in the Department of English in Shivaji University. She has translated some plays and poems from Marathi into English.
