The work described here is an attempt to elucidate some of the important steps involved in visuals search. It has two main objectives:
1. To provide the reader a platform for conducting visual search experiments.
2. To acquaint the reader with various theories of visual search. Present work contains systematic presentation of multiple complexities involved in visual search experiments. Introduction is followed by a short review of theoretical work and models available so far. Little progress has been made because most successful theories have descriptive but not definitive value. A systematic description of the variables/ factors involved in visual search has been suggested, followed by applicability of psychophysical detection theory along with a chapter on apparatus and finally the recommendations for further research in untapped area.
The 2nd part represents the concept of target detection, attention and perception, role of camouflage in target detection as well as how signal detection theory has its significance in target detection. Sensors used in TD are also mentioned. Illusion highlights in the 3rd part including classification theories with some experimental studies.
