Vinatananda Vyayoga of Govinda or Sesha Govinda an eminent scholar of Benares, is printed and published for the first time. This edition is based on the only one Ms. (D No. 4646. B. No. 5242) available in the Tanjavur Serfoji Maharaja's Sarasvati Mahal Library. The author of this rupaka has contributed many valuable works in Sanskrit. The details of his compositions are furnished in the introduction and Prastavana. This Vyayoga has the unique distinction of being the most voluminous among the known plays of this kind. Having another name as "Prachanda Garuda", this drama with excelsior construction of 260 slokas and more, dialogues etc., superb description of details with dramatic tempo, and fine delineation of characters, deserves a place among the list of famous plays in Sanskrit literature. The main object of this edition is to bring out this brilliant Vyayoga of this great author to the knowledge of the lovers of Sanskrit drams. The editor is indebted to the authorities of the famous Tanjavur Sarasvati Mahal Library for having given me an opportunity, to edit this work for their publication. He expresses his gratitude to Sri Padmanabha Sarma Pandit of the Library for his useful suggestions and help. The editor owes a deep debt of gratitude to the District Collector and Director Sri E. This rupaka Vinatananda, Vyayoga has another name, Prachanda Garuda; both titles are given by the author himself. This work of Govinda Sesha is published for the first time by the authorities of the Thanjavur Sarasvati Mahal Library. This edition is based on the only one Ms. available from the famous Serfoji Maharaja's Sarsvati Mahal Library, Thanjavur. The No. of the Ms. is B. 5242; D. 4646., and this Ms. is not available in any other manuscript libraries, like Adayar, Madras. Mysore or Trivandrum. This fact is noted in the New Catalogue Catalogorum. Madras University, 1971 edition; Vol. III, p. 208.
This drama has two titles as aforesaid. The first title ‘Vinatananda Vyayoga' is seen in the Frontispiece of the ms. thus:- "Sri Sarvavidya Nidhana Kavindracharya Sarasvatinam Vinatananda Vyayoga". The second title is' mentioned in the body of the play thus : "Tenaiva Sauparnena Prachanda Garuda aparanamna Vinatananda Vyayogena Abhiniya-manena samajikanupasmahe" (Sutradhara). In the last line of this rupaka too, after Bharatavakya the author endorses the second title, thus : "Samaptaschayam Prachanda Garudo nama vyayogah.
