Book Description
Introduction

It is with mixed feelings that I am placing before the world of scholars, interested in Vedic studies, this work, the Vedavikrtilaksanasamgraha, originally conceived, planned, and commenced by the late Prof. K. V. Abhyankar, who had not only prepared a rough draft of the whole, but had even seen forty-eight pages of it through the press, when his life was mercilessly cut off. It was with a sense of duty to the sage-like Professor that I accepted Dr. R. N. Dandekar's suggestion to carry on the work, little dreaming at the moment of the many difficulties it necessarily involved. I have tried to do as much justice to the work and to the memory of the late Professor as I could with my limited capacities; and I sincerely hope that my labour has not altogether failed in achieving its goal.

The Vedavikrtilaksanasamgraha is, as the name suggests, a collection of (twelve) treatises, big and small and some of them with commentaries, dealing with the various modes of Vedic recitation (known as vikrtis) and allied topics.

(1) The Vikrtivalli (ViV.) is a tract of twenty-eight karikas attributed to Vyadi. After the benedictory and introductory verses (1-4), the author gives the names of the eight vikrtis and explains in some details the mode of forming the jata (5-20). The remaining vikrtis, of which Mala alone has two varieties, have been described in the karikas that follow (21-28).

Vyadi is an ancient authority in the field of Vyakarana, often referred to in the Pratisakhyas, the Mahabhasya, and many other works. He is known to have written the Samgraha, a voluminous work on Sanskrit grammar, and also a paribhasa work named the Paribhasasucana. But whether this Vyadi can be identified with the author of the Vikrtivalli is not easy to decide.
