CONCEPT OF VATA DOSHA IN MODERN PERSPECTIVE: Vata one among three doshas play important role in both health and diseased condition. So Vata is called as Prana for human beings. It seems to be a problem found in student life, particularly first year of Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery to understand about the concept of vata dosha. Increased demand of Ayurveda science in the present society is required to understand the depth of Ayurvedic Principle in an easy mode. Hence an attempt has been made to rearrange and critically analyze the material related to vata dosha available in classical textbooks of Ayurveda along with their translation in English. The translation, notes and interpretations are based on current knowledge in medical physiology. It is hoped that present work will provide beneficial for all Ayurvedic students pursuing their undergraduate or postgraduate studies and also for Ayurvedic physician and teachers.
Dr Pritam Moharana author of this work is currently working as resident medical officer in Sri Sri College of Ayurvedic Science and Research Hospital at Sri Sri Univeisity, Cuttack. He pursued his BAMS from K.A.T.S. Ayurved College and hospital, Ankushpur, Ganjam in the year 2015 and M.D. (Ayu) in Kriya Sharir from Ch. Brahm Prakash Ayurved Charak Sansthan, New Delhi in the year 2020. He has published more than 15 research papers in his credit at national and international level. He has presented 5 seminars and attended more than 10 workshops at national and international level. He has 6 month clinical experience in Covid Hospital at DHH, Dhenkanal, Odisha. His area of interest is diagnosis and treatment based on basic concept of Ayurved and teaching methodologies.
Ayurveda science is described in our samhita as theory basis. It forms the base for all Ayurvedic concepts which is responsible for homeostasis of human body. Dosha, dhatu, mala are the root factors of living body. For this reason one has to learn their characteristics. Their normal function maintains homeostasis in living body. One should aware of importance of dosha-dhatu-mala to remain in physiological limit. Crossing this limit on either side is dangerous for health. The element which is responsible for formation of prakriti and which have the power of vitiating other body organ and tissue is called as dosha. Acharya vagbhatta has mentioned these three doshas are present all over the body. They are found predominantly in the region below, middle and above respectively of the area between heart and umbilicus i.e. vata is present below the umbilicus, pitta is present in between umbilicus and heart and kapha is present above the heart. These three doshas are beneficial and harmful as they are in normal and abnormal state respectively. When in normal state they bring about good results like growth. One cannot practically see the vata, pitta and kapha doshas. We can understand these concepts on the basis of its function. Again the function of each dosha is not unique. All these entities are equally important. A single function is not only described for any single structure in our Samhitas. There are many functions for a single entity on the other hand one single function is included under various entities. Therefore we cannot represent a single structure for the specific function of dosha, dhatu and mala. All these are equally important and do their functions with co operation of each other. Vata one among three doshas play important role in both health and diseased condition. So Vata is called as Prana for human beings. Five type of vata dosha act at different level at different structure. It cannot be represented by one structure because Ayurveda is the science that proofs its concept based on functional understanding. It seems to be a problem found in student life, particularly first year of Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery to understand about the concept of vata dosha. Increased demand of Ayurveda science in the present society is required to understand the depth of Ayurvedic Principle in an easy mode. Hence an effort is made to ascertain and establish the knowledge regarding physiological function of vata dosha according to ancient and contemporary basis.
