The Buddha or Gautam Buddha gave his first sermon, after enlightenment, at Sarnath, Varanasi. He taught for around 45 years and built a large following, both monastic and lay. His teaching is based on his insight into" dukha" or suffering and the end of dukha- the state called "Nirvana." Buddhism provided an alternate path to salvation with its 'Four Noble Truths' namely:

1. The world (Samsara) is full of suffering

2. Understanding the cause of suffering

3. Cessation of the suffering and

4. The path to end the suffering.
