Book Description
Preface

The present collection of essays has brought into a nest the ideas which kept me preoccupied over years. These ideas are not bits of conspicuous history but pebbles of knowledge collected in a quest for truth. The quest began long ago when I was a student of Presidency College, Calcutta and the first fruit of it was the essay entitled British Imperialism and its Legacy to India (Ch. VII) which was was pu published in the college journal under the inspiration of my teacher. Prof. Ashin Dasgupta. My academic and, later on for a few years, professional attachment to Marxism sustained this quest in me and essays under the titles Early Urbanization in India: A Marxist Study (Ch. II), Nationalism in the Twentieth Century: An Asian Perspective (Ch. V) and Whither India? (Ch. X) came out under the direct influence of this ideology. Whither India? has clubbed together under one caption a bunch of essays which were published from time to time in the Frontier, journal edited by the late Bengali poet a Samar Sen who taught me how to remain firm in my ideology under the rise and fall of apparent fortunes. In this bunch of essays will be available a short appreciation of a book on Tebhaga Movement by Sunil Sen. Prof. Sen, the author of this book on Tebhaga, was my erstwhile colleague. I entered the History De- partment of Rabindra Bharati University when he was the Head of that Department. His leadership in the Department was in many ways unique and when he retired from his post many of us proved too small to be competent heirs to his legacy. When he published his book on the Tebhaga Movement, the late Samar Sen asked me to review the book in the Frontier.
