Reptiles such as snakes (sarpa, naga) and turtles (kurma, kachchapa) abound in Indian mythology. They are presented as human creatures with human feelings of love, friendship and family responsibility, as well as revenge and deception. Their actions and reactions are most natural. The turtle Kambugreev lost his temper when people jeered at him. The snake Ashvasen harboured feelings of revenge against Arjun, the killer of his mother. Karkotak expressed gratitude to Nal who saved him from the forest fire. In Indian myths, snakes and turtles are not the cold-blooded creatures they are in reality.
