The works of the Two Vagbhațas represent a period of prominence in the history of Sanskrit Poetics. Theirs is the phase of Jaina literatures. Although they are practically forgotten today, they had an important role to play in contemporary times and the post-Dhvani period. A proper evaluation of their works on Poetics has always been a necessity. Thanks to Prof. Bijoya Goswami due to whose sincere effort the present learned work on The Two Vagbhațas has come to light.
The two Vagbhatas were well-known names in the world of literary criticism in ancient India. However, as time passed, their works too passed into obscurity. It occurred to my late teacher, Prof. Rabisankar Banerjee, to rescue their two books, Vagbhațalamkara and Kavyanusasana from their obscurity, and bring out their true merits. It was at his advice that I undertook this re-evaluation of the two works as a project under the DSA. Dept. of Sanskrit, Jadavpur University. Reading these books over and over again, and making an evaluation of their contents was a lengthy job, especially at a time when I was undergoing a great deal of mental trauma. However, work has always been a solace, and I am happy to say that completing this work gave me new strength.
I offer my humble salutations to my teacher, the late Prof. Rabisankar Banerjee for setting me on this path. I also express my gratitude to my colleagues in the Dept. of Sanskrit, Jadavpur University Prof. P.K. Dutta, Dr. Lalita Sengupta, Dr. Debarchana Sarkar, Dr. Piyali Praharaj, and last but not least, Prof. Manabendu Banerji, Co-ordinator, DSA, Dept. of Sanskrit, without whose benevolence and guidance I could never have completed this work. I am also grateful to Sri Abhijit Mukherjee for typing out my project and to Sri Debashish Bhattacharya of Sanskrit Pustak Bhandar for publishing it. To all who have helped me with my work. I offer my heartfelt thanks.
