Tulsidas hailed as the greatest Medieval poet of Hindi original dialects, it was he who single-handedly saved the Hindu faith from collapsing due to internecine sectarian feuds and presented before the world a unique vision of the Indian idealism through his magnum opus: "Sriramacharitamanas'. This book recreates his life-history from the available legends and the hints about his personal life thrown in his own creations, in a monolith form, and gives his most famous poems original text, its Romanised version alongwith their Hindi and English translations for the benefit of those who have only heard about him but have not read his 'gems' due to the language barrier. An indispensable entry to the devotees' library who love to learn about the very ethos that formed the Indian psyche.
B.K. Chaturvedi, born in a village, Holipura (Agra, UP), on August 3, a reputed family, had his education in Allahabad (M.Sc.) and Bangalore 1945 in a. (Computer programming). Having served for a couple of years in HMT, he is now a freelance author, journalist, poet and translator based in New Delhi for about a couple of decades.
He has many articles/poems and books published in both Hindi and English to his credit. Prominent among them are the metered-verse English translation of the famous epic of modern Hindi, KAMAYANI; original long poem DEHA-DANSHA; English verse translation of Sahir Ludhyanvi's famous Nazm PARCHAAINYAN; the latest being a journalistic appraisal, KARGIL BETRAYAL. He has also rendered 'SRIMADBHAGWAT GITA' into Hindi & English, published a couple of years ago. His translation, both in Hindi and English, of 'SRI RAM CHARITA MANAS' is likely to be published soon. A profic writer he often writes for TV and Radio.
Tulsidas is believed to be the crown-jewel Saint Poet of entire Hindi Literature and his 'Sriram charita manas' is accorded the status of a divine book by the Hindus. Of course, he is one of those poets whose creations command global respect but the present book is a humble attempt to reveal all aspects of his personality, apart from the representative selection of his creations. Since, he has written quite copiously and only in lyrical form, it a difficult task to select his poems, prayers etc. in such a way as to reveal the complete span of his creative scale. The criterion of the selection of the poems has mainly been their popularity. The translation of the text has been done keeping in mind the sensibility and the basic background of our Hindi and English readership. Since, he has influenced the rustic and the scholar alike, in order to make his impact realised by the readership one of his folk-bhajans has also been selected, although its authenticity - being a Tulsidas creation - is suspect. Nevertheless, the content and style bear an unmistakable stamp of Tulsidas.
