Preface

The present book 'Tribal Demography' is a descriptive demo graphical analysis of Indian tribes in six comprehensive chapters. The tribals settled down in India in prehistoric times, inhabiting mostly the sparsely populated tracts of hills and forests of the sub-Himalayanian and North Eastern regions, in the mountain belts of central India between Narmada and Godavari rivers and in the southern parts of the western ghats extending from Wynad to Kanyakumari. For a century, they lived in isolation and had limited contact with outside societies. This helped them to preserve their social customs, traditions and beliefs to a large extent. Social scientists, especially Anthropologists, have worked extensively on socio-economic and cultural life of the tribes. But little attempt have been made to study the tribal demographic situation.

In dealing with tribal society in our developmental process, we have a strange ambivalent and contradictory attitudes. On the one hand, we want the tribes to develop their distinct culture and to nourish them. On the other hand, we want them to be assimilated into main stream of development of the country as a whole. It is true that the development proceeds tribes to tend to get assimilated into the main stream of the country, but geographical features and ethnic characters forced them to be alienated from the other people of the developed society.
