Thrissur, the cultural capital of Kerala, lies almost in the central region of the state. Thrissur district lies between north latitudes 10° 10' 40" -10° 40' 00" and east longitudes 76° 49'05"-76° 26' 05". The district had played a significant part in fostering the trade relations between Kerala and the outside world in the ancient and medieval periods. It also played an important part in fostering cultural relations and in laying the foundation of a cosmopolitan and composite culture in this part of the country. Muziris, generally identified with Cranganur as it was called in ancient times, was a vibrant centre for trade with eastern and western world and had the unique distinction of being the 'Premium Emporium India'-the most important port in India and holds an important place in nurturing the history of Kerala. The district had witnessed many rulers and dynasties like kochi dynasty, Samutiris of Kozhikode, Tipu Sultan of Mysore and Europeans including Dutch, Portuguese and English who were responsible in moulding the destiny of the region.
