About the Book
The Upanisads occupy a unique place in the history of spiritual and philosophical thought of India, nay the world. It is known that Upanisads form the concluding portions of the Veda, and are therefore called the Vedanta or the end of the Veda. It re ally contains the essence of the Vedic teaching. The teaching, being the highest, was imparted at private sittings only to the qualified disciples. Besides, they are the foundations on which most of the later philosophies and religions of India rest.

The Upanisads disseminate secret knowledge by which ignorance is dispelled. They give us both spiritual vision and philosophical thought.

The present Edition contains the (Sanskrit) text as well as English translation of the Thirteen Principal Upanisads, viz. Bṛhadaranyaka, Chandogya, Taittiriya, Aitareya, Kausītaki, Kena, Katha, Isa, Mundaka, Praśna, Māṇḍūkya, Śvetā svatara and Maitri.

Introduction
The word Upanisad in derived from the root sad- with the prefixes 'upa' and 'ni'. The root sad- has more than one meaning. When it means to destroy, the term Upanisad would mean that the teachings in the philosophical works so named to destroy the ignorance of their pupils. As the root also means to sit, the name Upanisad may have been given to such teach ings, because they required close sittings of the disciple with his teacher. Hence, it means secret teaching and such teach ings were not intended for the common people, but for the good disciples only. The word therefore means:- the sitting down of the disciple near his teacher in a devoted manner to revive instruction about the Highest Reality which loosens all doubts and destroys all ignorance of the disciple. Gradually the word came to signify any secret teaching about Reality. i.e., Brahman and it is used by the Upanisads in this sense (rahasya or guhya vidya).

The number of the Upanisads varies according to differ ent authorities. Each of the four Vedas has its particular Upanisads assigned to it. The total number, according to some estimate, is more than 300. Of these, 108 have been recovered, recognized and also published. The Muktikopanisad also given the number of the Upanisads as 108 (videhamuktāvicchā cedastottaraśatam patha). But, these days, ten Upanisads are regarded as important and authentic.
