Forward

Ayurvedic Pharmaceutics is a skillful art and science of drug manufacturing. Ayurveda, a divine life science, developed on the wisdom of Indian philosophy. Ultimate aim of Ayurveda is to maintain the health and healthy status of mankind and eliminate the diseases of diseased person. For the successful management of diseases, Physician; Medicine (drugs); Nursing staff and Patient are considered as the essential four pillars. In absence of these four pillars with their all qualities success to achieve this goal is doubtful. Among these four, drugs occupied important second position. Drug is an important tool by which disease can be eliminated. Source of drug material in Ayurveda is plants, animals and minerals. These are utilized for both the purposes i.e. diet for nutrition and drug to treat the diseases. Material as such available in the nature is needed for proper processing to make them suitable for diet and medicine purposes. This processing of material is done to produce various dosage forms which are known as Ayurvedic pharmaceutics. It is a skillful art and science to convert the material suitable for the purpose of therapeutics with safe, effective, palatable, durable and cost effective.

The subject of Ayurvedic Pharmaceutics is covered by the Rasa Shastra and Bhaishajya Kalpana. Bhaishajya Kalpana (Ayurvedic Pharmaceutics) is an integral part of Chikitsa (Ayurvedic therapeutics) and it started with the development of Ayurveda. Its chronological development can be observed in Ayurvedic literature. Later Rasa Shastra (mineral processing) developed during the medieval period (around 6th century A.D.) and included in Ayurvedic Pharmaceutics (Bhaishjya Kalpana) as a supplement. With this many new dosage forms like Bhasma, Pisti, Kupipakwa, Parpati, Pottali, Druti, Satva Bhasma and innumerous Kharaliya Preparations were developed and facilitated Ayurvedic therapeutics. Bhaishajya Kalpana fulfills closely the need of Chikitsa (Ayurvedic therapeutics) as per immediate requirements.

Classics of Ayurveda are a great treasure of medical knowledge. It covers the entire aspects of health and diseases. From the prevention to treatment are dealt elaborately in it. Ayurvedic pharmaceutics involve in both the aspects. Knowledge of ancient classical formulations to modern contemporary development in Ayurvedic Pharmaceutics is the need of the time. In this regard this present contribution will considered as a good quality book on this subject. I would like to congratulate the author, Mr. Satadru Pal bag and the co-author, Miss Shikha Sharma for their effort to generate a good text book on this subject by the name of Text Book of Ayurvedic Pharmaceutics including. Hospital and Clinical Pharmacy keeping in view of the syllabus of diploma in Ayurvedic pharmacy running in major institutes in India. Book has covered all aspects of Ayurveda Pharmacy as well as its contemporary subjects.

I hope that this work will be certainly appreciated by the students and teachers of this subject, Ayurvedic Pharmaceutics. I congratulate to the writers of this book, for their untiring effort, and wish them for their bright and prosperous future.

Preface

With the advent of time, the technical aspect of Ayurveda is getting established along with the clinical aspects of Ayurveda. Today's world believe on evidence based medicine and modern concepts of Quality by design(QBD) and drug validation is an important milestone for setting up the standards for Ayurvedic medicine. The main role of producing quality medicine is bestowed over Ayurvedic pharmacists and Ayurvedic production chemists. Hence Ayurvedic pharmaceutics is an integral area of interest for the diploma in pharmacy (Ayurveda) or Upvaid course as well as bachelor of pharmacy (Ayurveda). Ayurvedic pharmaceutics is closely resembled to Raso Shastra and Bhaisajya Kalpana but they are not the same subject, Ayurvedic pharmaceutics though mainly deals with classical Ayurvedic drugs preparation but they also cover up the modern dosage forms of Ayurvedic drugs and elaborate the role of modem pharmaceutical instruments in the manufacture of" Ayurvedic drugs. We can also add the knowledge of different pharmacopeias in the subject of Ayurvedic pharmaceutics.

The knowledge of dispensing and hospital pharmacy is very vital for the Ayurvedic pharmacists for performing efficiently their duties in serving the hospital. The knowledge of posology, routes of drug administration, reading prescription, knowledge of sterilization, metrology systems of weight and measurements, drug store management, maintaining stock of drugs and knowledge of drug distribution system in hospital are very crucial to become efficient Ayurvedic pharmacists.

Until now there is no single book in Ayurveda which deals with Ayurvedic pharmaceutics including hospital and clinical pharmacy to meet the necessities of diploma students in pharmacy and nursing in Ayurveda. They mainly depend on allopathic pharmacy books to fulfill their needs over hospital pharmacy, dispensing pharmacy and clinical pharmacy and modern pharmaceutics books to study the modern dosage forms . . The author made a humble try to bridge this ,vogue space, by the introduction of this text book with topic entitled, 'Text book . / of Ayurvedic pharmaceutics including hospital and clinical pharmacy'. Apart from the usual syllabus, the author also described about G.M.P, legal aspects of Ayurvedic drugs as well as, requirements of an Ayurvedic hospital according to the Clinical Establishment Act. Though this book is specially devoted for the needs of D. pharmacy (Ayurveda)/ Upvaid students but it is immensely helpful for B. pharmacy (Ayurveda) students also.

The author have made his level best to collect and present the data in the concerned subject, but still if any scholar or student find any lacuna in this book, positive criticism will be obliged whole-heartedly.
