Book Description
Foreword

The Central Institute of Indian Languages, which is a Department of the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Govt. of India has been engaged through its Regional Language Centres in training the in-service teachers drawn from various parts of the country. Apart from giving training, the Regional Language Centres are also undertaking research projects in several written and unwritten languages. The language training imparted is to facilitate the implementation of the three language formula in the country by making available teachers trained in languages other than their mother tongues. The Southern Regional Language Centre has been engaged in the task of training teachers in four Dravidian languages viz., Kannada, Malayalam, Tamil and Telugu. The state of Haryana has adopted Telugu as the third language for their schools and many teachers from Haryana state have been trained in Telugu. The training programme is so intensive that on completion, the trained teachers are able to teach the language at least at the first four levels. However, no suitable instructional material is available for teaching Indian languages as second languages in different states in the Hindi region. It is with a view to provide instructional material in Telugu, for use in the Hindi region and more particularly in the State of Haryana that the Centre’s faculty has prepared a series Of Telugu Readers under the title Telugu-Velugu.

It is gratifying to record that the first level textbook is no longer available. With the experiences gained through the constant feed-back, the first level reader has been thoroughly revised and practically it is written afresh. There have been a number of requests from the teachers from Haryana and other Hindi speaking regions for making this material available. Therefore a fresh reader is now being brought out to cater their needs.

I am happy that Sri M. Parandhama Reddy, a member of the academic staff of the Institute who had second language teaching experience in the Southern Regional Language Centre has undertaken to bring out the present version. A number of exercises considered suitable and helpful for second language learners have been included in this book.
