Preface

With the formation of Telangana State, the study of its history and culture has started receiving and gaining increased, added and new focus and attention. From ancient down to present times, this region, in geographical, administrative, social and cultural fields, has been maintaining its uniqueness, individuality and importance. In the composite Hyderabad State, as well as in integrated Andhra Pradesh, Telangana people and leaders have always been in the forefront in movements and reforms. This new State, with natural and human resources in plenty, and enthusiasm and determination of its administrators, is marching in the path of progress, with only sky as its limit.

In this work that is brought out by Telugu Akademi, introductory aspects of Telangana history and the highlights of the Pre-historic age have been dealt with at the outset. The developments of the historic age, in view of convenience of reading, understanding and chronology, have been discussed under the captions of Ancient, Medieval and Modern Ages. Whereas Satavahanas, Ikshavakus, Vakatakas, Vishnukunds, Chalukyas and Rashtrakutas had been the major dynasties that reigned in Ancient period, Kakatiyas, Padmanayakas, Velamas and Kutubshahis figured prominently in Medieval period and the Asafjahis had a long rule in Modern period, covering three-fourths of the total period. In respect of each one of these dynasties, political developments, system of administration, economic development, social organisation and cultural progress have been systematically examined and analysed. Historical Maps indicating the extent of the territory under the rule of the different dynasties and exhibits of one or two specimens or masterpieces symbolising the glorious achievements of some of the rulers, have also been included. People's Movements and Revolutions such as Freedom Struggle in Hyderabad State, Telangana Peasants Armed Struggle and the Struggle that went on for achieving Separate Telangana State, have been portrayed and discussed at length. Social aspects, such as Tribal, Dalit and Women's Movements, educational reforms and the role of newspapers have also been given due place in the coverage and presentation of events.

All efforts have been made to put this work in the hands of the students and the interested readers within the shortest time possible. It is hoped that this would meet their expectations and help them in all possible ways.
