Preface

Globalization has rendered the world a small village and greatly enhanced the need for closer communication. This endeavour represents a modest response to that need. A new approach to the teaching and learning of a foreign language in a short duration fur better understanding has never been as intensely needed as it is now. Attempts have, therefore, been made over a few decades to innovate ways and means to teach a foreign language exclusively keeping in view the time factor. This book is a step forward in that direction.

Broadly divided into three parts, it has specifically been designed for tourists, businessmen and students who have never had an opportunity to study Arabic or those who have studied it at school level and would like to improve their language skill. The first part deals with the minimum and the simplest rules of grammar that are indispensable in the learning of Arabic while complicated rides have deliberately been avoided. Grammatical rules are followed by examples and necessary exercises. The second part is divided into a number of units. Each unit deals with a particular theme such as introduction, marketing, travelling and similar live situations which the tourists, businessmen and students are likely to come across during their stay in Arabic-speaking countries. It also contains an additional list of words relating to select topics with a view to enhancing the vocabulary of the reader. Since the book is aimed at imparting basic communicative skills in spoken language, preference, at many places, has been given to the colloquial form of words and expressions generally used by the Arabs and their pronunciations are given as they are spoken. For example the word has been given as Hindi instead of Hindiun. However, for the benefit of the learners who are not acquainted with the ‘International Phonetic Alphabet’ the easiest method of pronunciation has been adopted.

In the end we wish to express our sincere thanks to Mr. S.K. Ghai, Mg. Director, Sterling Publishers Pvt. Ltd., who has been instrumental behind this project. Thanks are also due to Dr. Zafarul-Islam Khan and his staff for excellent typesetting of the book. Finally we request the readers to give us feedback as it will help us improve the book in its next edition.
