Book Description
About The Book

Some 500 years ago, the great devotee scholar Rüpa Gosvami wrote Upadesamrta, which provides a summary of the entire process of devotional service in just eleven verses. These verses have served as a practical guide for generations of Vaishnava teachers, who have written Sanskrit and Bengali commentaries on the text. In the 20" century, A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, founder-acarya of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness, published an English translation and commentary on Upadesameta, titled The Nectar of Instruction, and told his disciples that this book should be part of the standard curriculum for anyone who wants to learn the science of bhakti.

In Tava Päche Päche, Hanumatpresaka Swami provides a detailed study guide to the Nectar of Instruction. The book proceeds verse by verse, tracing every scriptural reference and considering each phrase in depth, while providing many practical examples. The appendices offer further resources for in-depth study, such as a guide to the Sanskrit meters found in Upadesamrta and a list of all references quoted by Srila Prabhupada. This book will be useful for all sincere and serious students of the Nectar of Instruction, but especially those who are those at the Bhakti-vaibhava level of study.

About the Author

The author, Hanumatprešaka Swami, is a lifelong student and scholar of the Upadesamṛta. Born in 1948 on the Pacific island of Guam, his life's work has been at the intersection of East and West. He graduated from the University of California Davis with first place in Psychology and minors in biology and electrical engineering. He began a PhD in psychology at Northwestern University, but with the encouragement of his mentor, Donald T. Campbell, he decided to leave doctoral studies and journey East. He earned a black belt in Okinawan Karate and eventually met his spiritual teacher, Srila Prabhupada, from whom he received initiation in 1974. In 1984, Hanumatpresaka Swami took lifelong vows as a renounced monk and began traveling around the world. Since then, he has organized numerous academic conferences on science and religion, published several scholarly books, served as visiting professor at San Marcos University (Peru), and founded the North American Institute for Oriental and Classical Studies. His presentations on Hamlet and Arjuna, C.G. Jung and the Bhakti Siddhanta of Traditional India, Cultivation of the Human Spirit, Sankhya philosophy, dramaturgy, and other topics have received much acclaim around the world.

Preface

This Tava Päche Päche (TPP) is an effort to make Srila Prabhupada's Nectar of Instruction more and more accessible to the whole world. We have honestly been inspired by Waves of Devotion by H. H. Dhanurdhara Swami which gives illumination to Srila Prabhupada's Nectar of Devotion.

Of course, our TPP is for all the sincere souls who want to return to the Kingdom of God and get back to work. Srila Prabhupada wanted a copy of Nol in every home in the world, but it can also be related to the formal ISKCON Bhakti-sastri, Bhakti-vaibhava, Bhaktivedanta diplomas, Our general focus here is for those at the Bhakti-vahbhava level of study. Our epistemology is not that we study one thing and then leave it, going on to the next. Rather, we go through each book again and again, but each time higher. It is a spiral education.

Here we are working through Nol carefully, looking up all the references, considering each phrase in depth. We are focusing on people who are preparing to take sannyasa, Bhakti-vaibhava is recommended for them. Of course, ladies don't take sannyasa formally but they also must become gosvämïs. We can read Nol casually for the first time, and then read it again for Bhakti-Sästri, and then again at the Bhakti-vaibhava level. This TPP is focusing on this level of devotee.

We are very honored to acknowledge the contribution of many devotees, scholars, friends and students who have contributed to this edition of TPP. It is a product of the Añjana Suta Academy of which we are just the Head. Especially we will mention Srinatha Krsna Dasa, Radhika-ramana Däsa, Ajäta-satru Dasa, Sitä-lalită Devi Dasi, but there are so many more. Thank you. We are sure that God who sees all things in private will always reward us in private for our work.
