The Ramayan is the most adored tome of the Sanatan Dharma (or the followers of the Hindu faith) like the Vedas. The Ramayan describes the doings of Lord Ram in a simple way and establishes the Lord as an ideal for all to follow. Despite being the incarnation of the Blessed Lord Vishnu, Ram suffered the travails of the human life like an ordinary being and yet established the norms of propriety before all humankind. The author of the Ramayan, Sage Valmiki, has vividly described all achievements of Ram and inspired all to seek the ideals created by the Maryada Purushottam (man par excellence). No doubt, we have had his followers all over the world in every age and aeon.

This tome leaves nothing untouched in human life who should be an ideal family man, a king, an ideal son, ideal brother, ideal wife and ideal mother etc. have been engrossingly explained in this great epic with live examples. For every age and generation there is enough material to think on and create one's ideal and live by it.

Owing to the Ramayan's huge canvas covering every walk and activity of life, its popularity has ever remained undiminished. It doesn't only inspire the individual but every society and nation. No wonder, even Gandhiji couldn't help thinking of any other name when he wanted to describe an ideal state. He said it to be 'Rama-Rajya'. Now this term has become synonymous with the best-governed state or kingdom. Ram has impacted so much on every generation that another incarnation of the Blessed Lord Vishnu, Krishna, extols his (Ram's) virtues in his Bhagwat Gita as well.
