Book Description
Preface

We are happy to present this prestigious collection of rich and recent art works done by all those artists who have won the National Akademi Awards over a period of 50 years.

Going through the entire collection, I am pleased that the exhibition with 358 works, by as many artists, is well conceived by the Curator Shri Amrut Patel and I congratulate him for his efforts.

It is also a fitting tribute from the artists' community to the Lalit Kala Akademi. My sincere thanks to all the participants who have extended their support.

Shri Keshav Malik's article "Love Labour: Not Lost" in the catalogue of this exhibition gives a chronology of study through the works presented at various National Exhibitions during the last 50 years.

In recent years the National Exhibition has been presented at various important cities so that art lovers all over the country have an opportunity to view the rich art collections from time to time in different states.

I am indeed grateful to the Department of Culture, Government of India for their continuous support for all such events carried out by the Lalit Kala Akademi.

Foreword

It is with great sense of satisfaction and pleasure that the Lalit Kala Akademi presents this exhibition. Lalit Kala Akademi has an interesting period ahead, as it is set to take on a new momentum with its Golden Jubilee Celebration plans. Putting together a colossal col project of this magnitude involves a lot of energy, time, perseverance and finances. While placing creativity at the heart of this process, the standard and scale of the exhibition is one of the areas in which we intend to influence behaviour and mindset.

From the initial stages of bringing about an awareness, we are forging ahead towards consolidation and renewal. This manifestation is more than an exhibition. It is a cultural event which will undoubtedly provide a forum for interaction amongst art lovers. We have made an effort to showcase the works of 358 mainstream artists from different parts of the country as well as from our own collection. These works do not, in any way, represent the evolution of art but are select examples wherein each artist is restricted to a single work. So varied are these works in respect of technique, medium and artistic response that each constitutes an entity in itself.

This informative and comprehensive catalogue documenting the exhibition has been put together to provide a textual interface to all the individual works.

Any art institution, big or small, requires the support of an art community and we are fortunate enough to have their faith reposed in us. Not only have they supported our vision but also helped us to over come the anticipated hurdles in the course of execution of a show of such enormity.

I wish to express my sincere thanks to all those artists who have contributed for this exhibition. I extend my gratitude to the curator Shri Amrut Patel, and contributors Ms. Ella Datta and Shri Keshav Malik for their invaluable insights. My very special thanks to Prof. R.B. Bhaskaran, Chairman Lalit Kala Akademi, Prof. C.L. Porinchukutty, Vice Chairman and Board members for their conceptual inputs.

Above all wish to thank Shri Jaipal Reddy, Hon'ble Minister for Culture, Mrs. Neena Rajan, Secretary Department of Culture and Mr. K. Jayakumar, Joint Secretary, Ms. Sushma Bahl, Consultant for their constant support in all matters relating to the Golden Jubilee Celebrations.
