As Swami Vivekananda Centenary Lecturer for 1973 Mrs Marie Louise Burke gave two lectures at the Institute in March 1974. The lectures were held by the University of Calcutta in collaboration with the Institute. The first lecture was entitled 'Swami Vivekananda: Hope of the Modern West' and the second, 'Swami Vivekananda's Message of Vedanta to the West'. These two lectures were reproduced in the May and June 1974 issues of the Institute's Bulletin. As lectures and as articles in the Bulletin they received a very enthusiastic response and are therefore now published in booklet form with the comprehensive title Swami Vivekananda: Prophet of the Modern Age.
A member of the Vedanta Society of Northern California, Mrs Marie Louise Burke is the author of Swami Vivekananda in America: New Discoveries (1958) and Swami Vivekananda: His Second Visit to the West: New Discoveries (1973). These two books present hitherto unknown facts regarding Swami Vivekananda's life and work in America from 1893 to 1896 and, during his second visit, from 1899 to 1900.
