THE ANTHOLOGY
Here I present Suvarna-mala to the public. It is an anthology of Sanskrit lyric poetry compiled by Rampratap Shastri. The poems collected here. cover a vast time-span of classical Sanskrit literature. The total number of the stanzas included here, is 1311. Most of the poems represent excellent poetry, lofty ideals. devotional expressions, and the philosophy of Vedanta.
I found three manuscript-diaries written by Rampratap himself in his personal library. One diary is dated 1929 A.D.. I presume that he began collecting these poems in 1915 A.D. or so and continued collecting till 1945 A.D. The manuscript is legible. It is written in black ink and letters are very beautiful.
I have myself translated the text in English and in Hindi together with exegetical notes. The translation in English and in Hindi will help the readers other than professional Sanskritists. While editing the text. I found that the Rampratap has frequently changed the authors' texts. The original readings are given in the notes. This changing in the text he has done mostly to enhance the poetic charm and sometimes to make the idea more clear.
It was an uphill task for me to trace the original texts. references and verify them with the text of the present anthology. Most of the poems of this anthology are new: new in the sense that they are not available in the so far known anthologies such as the Subhasitavali of Vallabhadeva and the Subhasıta - ratna kosa compiled by Vidyakara.
