Book Description

From the Jacket

The present work is the outcome of the author's research work at the University of Poona (India). The work is an analytical, critical and comprehensive study of the views of Suresvara on one of the most importance topics in the Brhadaranyakopanisad. The Brhadaranyakopanisad has differently been explained by different authorities among whom Suresvara occupies a very important place. His Varttika, in spite of being his most outstanding contribution to the Vedanta philosophy, has not yet been translated or explained in any modern language. The present work covers a new ground and may be recognized as the first fruitful attempt in this respect.

The work consists of two parts. Part I is Introduction and Part II is Translation and Annotation. The Introduction discusses with clarity what Suresvara has dealt with in his Brhadaranyakopanisad-bhasyavartika. Some of these topics are: the so-called injunction in Vedanta, the views of Sankara and Suresvara with regard to the preliminary accessories to the knowledge of the Atman, viz. nityakarmanusthana, samnyasa and so on. Where necessary, the author also offers a comparative study of the Vartika and the Gaudapadakarika and that of the Vartika with the Naiskarmyasiddhi and other works of Suresvara.

Part II gives an English translation of Brhadaranyakopanisad 2.4 and 4.5 with exhaustive notes. They are followed by Select Glossary, Bibliography and Verse Index.
