Book Description
About the Book
Nationalism has been one of the most po tent motivating factor of the contemporary world. And no movement be it religious, social or po litical can tread the path of success without an effective and able leadership therefore leader ship and nationalism is two sides of one coin nation. This book provides a new account of the Asian nationalism and development of anti-co lonial imperialist movement in Indonesia led by charismatic leader Ir. Sukarno. The author de scribes that how Indonesian strategic significance has wielded tremendous influence in shaping its leadership and nationalism.

Sukarno's leadership cannot detched from tradition. Taking inspiration from Ramayana and Mahabharata Sukamo linked the Dutch rule with Kauravas and Indonesian struggle against the alien rule with Pandavas and motivated to In donesian to be one like Rama's army of Mon keys. Sukarno mobilized the weapon of spirit to creat unity to built a mass movement. But it is remarkable, inspite of religious background and teaching, Sukarno was the spokesman of secular nationalism.

This book analyses Sukarno's policy of non-cooperation with dutch rule as influenced by Mahatma Gandhi and his strategy to collabo rate with occupying Japanese forces. An attempt has been made to examines as how Sukarno's chairmanship of different Japanese organization shaped him as a leader and how Sukamo took them all as an instrument to spread national feel ings among the masses and strengthen Indonesianism. The book also sheds a new light on the synthesis of Sukarnoist thinking called Pantja Sila, which is the necleus of Indonesian philosophy and foundation of Indonesian state. Preface
Indonesia which was known as the Dutch East Indies before the second World War, is the largest archipelago in the world. By its geopolitical position Indonesia commands the passage between the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean. During the exploration of the world by the Europe ans and in their search for spices the Portuguese arrived in Indonesia in 1511 and later the Dutch started colonizing the country in 1602, since then Indonesia was under Dutch rule for almost three hundred and fifty years. When the second World War broke out the Japanese occupied the Dutch East Indies. Later when American troops landed in Okinawa and the Japanese surrendered to the Allies, it opened the opportunity for Indonesian people to proclaim independence. But Indonesian independence was neither recognized by the British nor by the Dutch till the Hague Agreement was signed in 1949.
