About the Author

Dr. Indra Chandra Shastri, Shastracharya, Vedanta- Varidhi, Nyayatirtha (27.05.1912-03.11.1986), Head of the Department of Sanskrit, Institute of Post-Graduate Studies, University of Delhi, was an exceptional scholar, author, philosopher and exponent. His contributions are pioneering and have blazed a new trail. His important works include Jain Epistemology, Sanskrit Kavyashastra Ka Itihas, Pali Bhasha Aur Sahitya and many others. A versatile genius, he was dedicated to the highest cause of social reform and national integration. Throughout his life he carried out an effective compaign against obscurantism, superstitions and religious dogma through the medium of his books, articles and lectures throughout India. Distinguished by notable academic achievements, his career spanned more than half a century and a total of about 70 books and nearly 300 research papers and articles on religion, philosophy, culture, poetics, philology, Jain literature, sociology, linguistics, grammar etc. He was an authority on Jainism, Sanskrit, Pali, Prakrit, Magdhi, Ardha-magdhi and Hindi. His work is by all accounts monumental and is of fundamental value. He lost his eyesight some 26 years before death but worked indefatigably and undeterred, a living profile in courage and dedication. Though blind he had a rare vision.

Highly valued by the student community and contemporary eminent personalities, he was awarded 'Certificate of Honour' by the President of India for outstanding contribution to Sanskrit. The chief minister of Delhi named the Main Road of Shakti Nagar after his name. To honour his outstanding lifelong contribution in the field of learning and social reform, Govt. of India issued a special commemorative postal stamp of Rs. Five on his Birth Anniversary on May 27, 2004.
