Book Description
Foreword

It gives me immense pleasure to write a Foreword to Dr. Gopabandhu Mishra's new work "Studies in Paribhasas of Nagesa" being published by a renowned publisher of Varanasi. Paribhasas or metarules as they are christened in modern liguistic terminology. Are essentially associated with the interpretation of Sutras, the basic rules of a Sastra. Every Sastra has its own paribhasa, but some paribhasas widely comprehend several other systems of thought expressed in Sutra-style. In the field of grammar Panini himself used and expressed several such meta-rules while his commentators also framed their own sentences in the form of paribhasas. A number of works dealing with subsequent paribhasas exclusively came to light from 10th century onwards. The most popular work is the Paribhasendusekhara by a 18th century genius of Varanasi, Nagesa Bhatta. Like his other works in the domain of Neo-grammar and philosophy of grammar, this work also testifies his unique and serious method explaining a knotty point under review.

Dr. Mishra's present work is a critical study of some of the paribhasas of Nagesa, categorized as general paribhasas, those concerned with the word, the meaning and both. Grammatical paribhasas of general nature cannot be treated scientifically with better categorization. Every paribhasa that finds place in this work has been discussed in its full perspective. Its soruce, utility and uniqueness are all explained in the simplest language possible. Hence no further paribhasa-work is required to comprehend the discussion in this work.

I congratulate Dr. Gopabhandhu Mishra o the Sanskrit Department of Banaras Hindu University for presenting this work to the world of Sanskrit Grammarians.

About the Book

The book 'Studies in Paribhasas of Nagesa' is a critical analysis of 37 Paribhasas of the Paribhasendusekhara of Nagesa, the great New-Paninian Vaiyakarana of 18th Century. These Paribhasas are of four categories: (1) general, (ii) dealing with the word, (iii) dealing with the sense and (iv) dealing with the both, word and sense, each paribhasa has been studied with its full perspective i.e. its source and shape, relevance and utility, explanation and uses, commonness and speciality etc. the work is intended to envisage the essentiality of the Paribhasas in general and to focus on the specialities of the Paribhasas of Sastratva-sampadaka-prakarana of the Paribhasendusekhara, in particular, among all available works on the Paribhasas.
