Indians are the inheritors of one of the greatest cultural, religious and spiritual traditions of the world. However, many Hindus in affluent western and westernised societies are unaware of their priceless heritage.
This great heritage was preserved for us through the devotion and commitment of the rishis and sages, in their gurukulas or ashrams. The word kula means 'family' Gurukula thus refers to the guru's family or the guru's household. In ancient India, the gurus lived in ashrams or forest hermitages, where disciples came to live with them, serve them and imbibe knowledge at their feet. Just as children at home learn everything by living with their parents and observing their behaviour, the disciples at the gurukula were like spiritual children, learning by close contact and observation. Thus, the gurukula offered much more than academic teaching; it offered a holistic and integral education of body, mind and spirit. But this life of simplicity and service was for the disciple's own benefit and inner growth. You could say that gurukula ashrams were perhaps the world's earliest residential schools!
