The role of women in a community is very important one and no nation can afford to ignore it. Women constitute an integral part of socio-economic life and no effort for economic development can be successful without the active participation of women. The unorganized sector provides employment to a very high proportion of working women in India. The informal sector also comprises of workers such as the construction labourers and domestic workers who contribute to building and servicing the modern capitalist sector.
A need to accord special recognition of the role of women while accepting their capabilities and to provide them a privileged position has been increasingly felt at the national and international level. Women need to be provided with government schemes, which are especially friendly to uneducated women, and can be availed at the place of their residence. Women's issues and concerns as a result will specially be addressed and reflected in all concerned laws, sect oral policies, plans and programmes of action. Knowledge about these poor women workers is essential if government has to adopt sound development strategies and more effective policies for attacking poverty.
