Preface

Though there are many English versions of Srimadbhagavadgita available at various book stores, but there is always a room to look at it from different points of view. As time changes, so the appeal and messages of Srimadbhagavadgita also appears to’ be different. It happens according to the need of the time. We are proceeding to a new age; we are going to face new challenges of life too. I felt, there is a need to write a new commentary on this holy text which will help us to walk at the right path of our eventful life. As we look around the world today, we could see the fear, the uncertainties and anxieties among the common people. Distrust, hatred and malicious feelings to one another are killing us. We badly need a real friend, a real guide to help us to see life from a very positive angle. I strongly believe, Srimadbhagavadgita could do that. It has that ability to lead people towards the path of divine life. It has that ability to protect people from all kinds of downfalls of life. I wrote this new commentary of Srimadbhagavadgita based on realization of my spiritual life and my knowledge of real world.

Presently, we recognize deep interest among people to study Srimadbhagavadgita all around the world. I thought a lot about how I could be useful to its student and teacher both. Finally, in this present edition, I decided to keep original Sanskrit verses as they are with the transliteration separately of each Sanskrit word, along with word by word meanings, and also offered a very practical and authentic commentary. From my own experience in dealings with the students of Srimadbhagavadgita for a long period of time directly, I know how this will be useful to both of its student and its teacher. I really do hope that my hard work will bring divine peace to many good souls and it is my heartfelt prayer that Bhagavan Sri Krsna showers His abundance of blessings to all.

It was indeed a very difficult job for me to complete this book, as I kept traveling one place to another place and one country to another country preaching the universal messages of peace, everywhere. Accordingly, while traveling in the countries like The United States of America (USA), Canada, England, Holland, Germany, Sweden, Norway, and other places of Europe, Australia, Fiji, New Zealand, South Africa, Kenya, Uganda and in some other countries in Asia, thinking the wonders of Bhagavan Sri Krsna and I kept writing. Finally, I am happy that I could finish it. At the end, it gave me a life fulfilling feelings of sweet peace.

Bhagavadgita is the essence of life. It is the essence of Vedic scriptures. I published my first edition of Srimadbhagavadgita in the year 2000. But then as days passed, as I grew up in age, I grew up in maturity, experience, knowledge, and in spirituality too. This second edition is a sincere effort to correct my previous errors and improve it as my best.

Srimadbhagavadgita gave me a lot. During the period of unending struggle in a new land, during the months of severe cold and in time of painful loneliness, it was and still it is my best friend, best companion, best guide, and also my best well-wisher. It gave me the touch of God, it provided me divine peace, and also the best company, I could imagine. I Hope, Srimadbhagavadgita will do the same to many in future whoever will make a friendship with it.

Srimadbhagavadgita is the divine message of the Lord Sri Krsna, He first taught it to Arjuna at the battle- field of Kurukshetra, long ago. Though the purpose of the Holy Gita was to motivate Arjuna to perform his natural duties, but the real purpose of this holy text was to deliver its immortal teachings to all. Assuming the form of a human being and accepting to draw the chariot of Arjuna, the middle Pandava brother, God Himself gave this unique message to us. We, human beings love to break the laws of nature and we enjoy doing it. That is how we decrease the longevity of our life. We forget that the real purpose of this most valuable human birth is to reach God. We forget human life is not just for earn, eat, drink, and be merry. By forgetting the higher goal of life, we commit many crimes and so, we reap the fruits of our own actions. Wise people advice that we should be in the company of noble people to change us. But instead of doing so, we break all codes of conduct and we ignore the instructions of saintly people. AB a result, we pay the price of our wrongful conduct. But though we might forget the Lord, we may deny His existence, He never forgets us, and He never forsakes us. All-pervading, All-blissful, Omniscience and Almighty Lord is ever wakeful to guide us unto the path of divinity. That is why, He comes age after age. He comes whenever we needed Him most. He comes whenever He thinks, is the right time to come. By coming, He uplifts the society by example, uplifts people by divine words, and He elevates our soul by giving divine talks. Srimadbhagavadgita is the sermon of God. It is the eternal truth which uplifts morality of the people and changes our whole way of thoughts. Srimadbhagavadgita is unparallel, unique and everlasting friend of all. It is the very life-force of all human beings.

Specialty of Srimadbhagavadgita: Holy Gita is a religious text. It is the sermon of God. It is very natural that study of Srimadbhagavadgita, contemplation on its deep inner meanings and its practice will be in a serene, peaceful and heavenly environment, so that people can take full benefit of it. But what we see here that the Lord chose a combat zone to give these unique lessons. Usually, battlefield is a terrible place where people kill each other cruelly and do insult to humanity. Though we know, to a soldier, battlefield is like a pilgrim place. In ancient days, a warrior used to think that battle for justice and fight for truth is a way to satisfy God or a pathway to reach heaven. Because, that is how they were being trained. But if we say the truth and what we see at the situation of the present day battlefield, it is very cruel, merciless, terrible, and very fearful. If it is that, then why the Lord chose a place like that to give this divine message? We are sure nobody will agree that a battle- ground is a right place to learn Holy Gita. Well, Srimadbhagavadgita is not an ordinary holy book. The Lord wanted to give a special message to us and that is-our life itself is full of battle. All of us are struggling to overcome the difficulties of life. We love and want to live a healthy life, a prosperous life. We all want to live with dignity, with respect and with honor. We want to live a pure and divine life. But the lower natures of our mind like anger, greed, temptation, wrongful attachment to temporary things, and then pride, selfishness, cruelty, meanness, malicious feelings to others, these powerful enemies which do not allow us to reach that goal of life. And so, there is always battle between our good and bad, there is always battle between divine and evil and there is unending battle between negative and positive approach of life. Lord Shri Krishna knew that and that is why He chose a battlefield to teach this divine sermon of Holy Gita. He wanted to teach us that a human being needs to be ever wakeful to fight these demons of our own mind, so that at the end, we can be victorious. We all are soldiers at this battlefield of life. We all want to reach the highest goal of life. But without struggle, nothing can be achieved and this is the reality of life.

By now, we know that why a battlefield was selected to teach the sermon of Srimadbhagavadgita. It is clear to us now that a battle-ground was a right place to impart these noble messages of Holy Gita to Arjuna, and to us.
