Introduction

Once upon a time, in ancient India, there was a famous king Shantanu of Kuru dynasty who ruled over a large kingdom from his capital Hastinapur. In time his grandson Pandu became the ruler of this kingdom When Pandu died his elder brother Dhritrashtra, who had earlier been bypassed because he was blind since birth, became the new ruler at Hastinapur. King Dhritrashtra had a hundred sons, the eldest one was Duryodhan, who was very strong-willed and ambitious Pandu had five sons of whom the eldest one was Yudhisthir who was well versed in religion and scriptures. The second son was Arjun who excelled in the use of all kinds of weapons especially bows and arrows. Arjun is the main character in Bhagavadgeeta He is lectured and preached by Lord Krishna in the battlefield of Kurukshetra.

The sons of Pandu, the famous five Pandavas were very strong and popular. There was great rivalry between them and the sons of Dhritrashtra generally known as Kauravas In order to avoid any future trouble king Dhritrashtra gave a part of his kingdom to Pandavas Its capital was Khandavprastha later renamed Indraprastha. With their skill and strength Pandavas made Indraprastha very rich and prosperous Duryodhan who was always very jealous of Pandavas always plotted to bring their downfall With the help of his crafty maternal uncle Shakuni he organised a grand gambling match between King Yudhisthir, who being the oldest of the five brothers ruled at Indraprastha, and Shakuni In the crooked game of dice Pandavas lost themselves and their entire kingdom They, along with their common wife Draupadi, were also exiled for thirteen years.
