A distinctive characteristic of affectionate attachment (being in love with someone) is, that an eager desire spontaneously awakens in the heart of the gallant to hear from his sweetheart about the superiority of her affection and the base inferiority of his affection towards her.

This riti (disposition, habit, nature) was originally expressed amongst the assembly of gopis who had gathered on the banks of the Kalindi that night of the Rasa dance. Prem Samput is simply a reverberation of that conversation, like the sound produced by the secondary strings of a lute that resonate along with the primary strings that are plucked.
