The theme of this work has deep bearing on the political and philosophical ideology of a learned saint, Sri Aurobindo, who in his early years, was deeply interested in raising the banner of revolt against the colonial rule. Having deep connections with the revolutionary movement, he performed his innings in an appreciable way. But ultimately, he landed into Pondicherry where he founded the Ashram which gained international fame.

This work deals with his life as a whole-his ideology and integral philosophy. The emphasis has been laid on his founding the Ashram, consciousness, ego and self, aspects and power of Mother, true relation with the Mother, sadhana through work, man in the universe, aspects of human life, death, desire and incapacity, ascent of life, double soul in man and the divine life.

Undoubtedly this work would be useful for teachers, scholars, students and several others who are interested in the philosophy and ideology of Sri Aurobindo.

Dr. S.R. Bakshi, Ph.D., D.Litt. is an eminent. scholar of Modern Indian History and is the author of several works on Indian nationalism and freedom movement. His recent works include 'Encyclopaedic History of Indian Culture and Religion' (in 5 Vols.), The Great Marathas' (in 5 Vols.), The Great Rajputs' (in 6 Vols.), 'B.R. Ambedkar: His Political and Social Ideology' (in 2 Vols.), 'Encyclopaedic History of The Sikhs and Sikhism' (in 6 Vols.), The Great Moghuls' (in 8 Vols.), and Development of Women, Children and Weaker Sections' (in 5 Vols.). Dr. Bakshi is member of several academic institutions having deep bearing on historical research.

Dr. Sangh Mittra, LL.B. Ph.D. from Lucknow University, is Dy. Director (Research) in Indian Council of Historical Research. Her Ph.D. thesis on 'Iconographic Study of Minor Brahmanical Deities in Northern India' is published along with more than 20 Research Papers in reputed historical journals. She is Life Member of several academic institutions and a reputed examiner of Ph.D. thesis of Universities of North India. Besides she has actively participated in numerous national and international Seminars.

Sri Aurobindo is one of the greatest original thinkers of modern times. A great Yogi indeed, who explained to the world cosmic consciousness and the concept of the super-mind or supra-mental states. His thoughts and philosophy had an originality that is at once impressive. His important works are: The Life Divine; The Synthesis of Yoga; The Ideal of Human Unity; The Human Cycle; The Foundations of Indian Culture; Essays on the Geeta; On the Veda; The Future Poetry; The Supra-mental Manifestations on the Earth and his epic Savittri.

"Aurobindo's preoccupation with intellectual and moral pursuits, his physical weakness, and his lack of interest in games might have caused the other boys to regard him as a prig had they not been won over by his innocence and candour. They did, however, considered him childish, and as a result tended to patronize him."

Why had Aurobindo lightly thrown away the chance to join the exalted ranks of the Indian Civil Service? He later explained that he simply 'didn't' want to be in the British Government Service'. His father, whom he deeply respected, would not have allowed him to reject the Indian Civil Service himself, so he forced the Commissioners to throw him out on the trivial grounds of failure in riding.

Aurobindo lived in Baroda for thirteen years, from Feb. 1893 to Feb., 1906. Beginning his service as a revenue- department trainee, he rose to be Vice-Principal of Baroda College. But his interests at the time lay in literature, politics, philosophy and yoga.
