It gives me great pleasure in placing this Volume in the hands of scholars interested in the study of Vedic Culture. This Volume contains Vedic ritual technical terms with their Sanskrit meanings and references. Necessary contexts are also indicated which will make understanding the terms casier.
This project was undertaken by the Centre long ago and Late Dr. Vidyadhar Bhide had completed the collection of materials on entries beginning with vowels. Unfortunately, he passed away before completing the project. After sometime, Dr. Srirama Sarma joined our Centre as Reader. I assigned this project to him since he possessed thorough knowledge of Srauta Rituals. He readily accepted the assignment and completed it during his stay at our Centre.
Although the original plan was to make this Lexicon bilingual (Sanskrit-English), it was decided to go phase-by-phase. It was thought that it would be proper to bring out this Lexicon in mono-lingual form (Sanskrit-Sanskrit) at the first phase and at the next phase we can go for its bilingual form (Sanskrit-English).
Therefore, this Srauta Lexicon is being made available in monolingual form (Sanskrit- Sanskrit) to the scholars so that they can use it and suggest improvements which may be considered for incorporating in the bilingual form of this Lexicon.
This work is expected to be useful not only to a Vedic scholar but also to anyone who is interested in the study of Vedic culture including Sociologists, Cultural Anthropologists, Philosophers, Mythologists, Historical Linguists, Cultural Historians and even to an inquisitive general reader and a layman.
I would like to thank Dr. Ch. Srirama Sarma for providing a great help to the scholars of Ancient Indian Culture. In my opinion it is a great academic service done by Dr. Sarma and I would like to put on record my deep sense of appreciation for this.
I would also like to put on record the help rendered by Dr. Krishna Kulkarni and Dr. Ramakant Pandey for preparing the Press Copy of this Lexicon and seeing the work through the press respectively.
The greatest hurdle on the way of understanding the Vedic ritual texts is the technical vocabulary. This Volume aims at removing such a hurdle to a great extent.
I hope, the Volume will be received with pleasure.
This is being published from the grant of the UGC. I, therefore, express my deep sense of gratitude towards the UGC.
