lt is many years since Dr. Ajit Puri first wrote t0 me, having consulted a neurological textbook which I had written, asking for my advice about the diagnosis and management of some of his patients who had presented to him with difficult diagnostic problems. I was happy to respond as best as I could at a distance, and later enjoyed meeting with him, first at his brother’s home in Government House, Bombay, in 1971, and then later on more than one occasion when he visited London. From all my talks with him, I have recognized that Dr. Puri is a dedicated, enthusiastic, caring physician. He believes, properly, that clinical medicine is concerned not just with diagnosis and management but also with disease prevention, and he also emphasizes in the following pages the crucial importance of activities concerned primarily with community health.
Dr. Puri has written this book in order to draw attention to important principles and guidelines relating to the early diagnosis and prevention of the commoner diseases which afflict mankind. The book is based upon his personal experience and will plainly be of interest not only to family physicians but also to medical students, specialist physicians and others working in the healthcare field, especially in the community. I congratulate Dr. Puri upon his energy and initiative and am glad to know that he has dedicated the book to the late Mother Teresa, who did so much throughout her life for the under—privileged.
Former Professor of Neurology and Dean of Medicine, University of Newcastle upon Tyne; former President, British Medical Association, Royal Society of Medicine and General Medical Council; former Warden, Green College, Oxford; former President, World Federation of Neurology.
The book has been primarily written for early diagnosis, prevention and treatment of common but fatal diseases so that such diseases could be diagnosed and! or prevented in infancy and the individual is saved from its serious and fatal complications.
The book proved enlightening and useful. Its first two editions have been acclaimed worldwide in 36 countries.
For this edition I have rethought the whole text to update its contents. Each chapter has been revised, some sections have been rewritten and there have been numerous additions and alterations.
There has been a constant exchange of views with world acclaimed medical authorities of different countries. Besides mentioning the discussions on varied topics in different chapters of the book in previous editions, one discussion has been added to the chapter on kidney under the sub—head urinary tract infection- benign enlargement of the prostate.
Likewise, another unusual manifestation of hypothyroidism, a rare case, earlier reported from Ukraine has been included in the chapter on the thyroid gland.
The last chapter on exercise has been revised and expanded.
The book has been appreciated by the World Health Organization (WHO). Dr. B.P. Kean, Director, External Cooperation and Partnerships, WHO, Geneva, Switzerland conveyed the collective comments that have been printed on the back of the jacket. The WHO team has placed the book at the international level
.For constant encouragement, I owe my gratitude to Lord Walton, former President of the British Medical Association and Royal Society of Medicine who also wrote the foreword to this book. I am glad to mention that in his letter of November 21, 2006 he wrote: "I was happy to write a foreword for your original book on How to Prevent Common Serious Diseases".

After presentation to the Vice-President of India, Ms. Maneka Gandhi, a noted human and animal rights activist, and to some governors of the Indian states, the book was presented to the present Prime Minister of India, Dr. Manmohan Singh. The event was highlighted through the Press Information Bureau, Government of India on the internet.

It is important to prevent, diagnose and treat, at the earliest, various serious disorders, especially the occult / hidden diseases, which are likely to go unnoticed in the beginning for various reasons, and which may surface when they have already reached an advanced stage. At such a stage, the treatment of such diseases can be costly or prohibitive anywhere, and at that point the disease may yet be fatal. Some of such diseases may be listed as: cancers, heart / lung diseases, diabetes, high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol /uric acid, neurological / abdominal/ thyroid gland disorders, diseases of the kidneys, etc.
It may be emphasized that for an early diagnosis of such diseases, it is always important to carry out various tests and examinations of both adults and children at regular intervals. For this purpose medical camps need to be organized. It come sunder the head, ’Clinical Epidemiology, i.e. the science dealing with the prevalence of diseases in a defined population through ~population surveys. It is a handy tool for the prevention of various serious diseases, especially the occult ones
In a clinical epidemiology session of the Joint Annual Conference of the Association of Physicians of India, held at Guwahati, January 1994 and at New Delhi, January 200l, l had the privilege to participate and elaborate my views. It was stressed that there was no way out except for an epidemiological study of various diseases to prevent the spread among the masses. Some of the medical camps that were organized by me, yielded fruitful results in this regard.
In this book, important guidelines for early and effective control of some of the fatal diseases are given. I feel that it is important that such vital information reaches all concerned, and that people take appropriate timely steps to prevent the occurrence of serious diseases.
It hardly needs stressing that one should not be afraid of the knowledge of the early warning signals / symptoms of various deadly diseases. As has been aptly remarked, "The real tragedy of life is when men are afraid of the Light". Hence, the significance of urgent understanding and attention in respect of various lethal diseases, that are a potential threat to human life and happiness, cannot be ignored.
It may be averred that the prevention and cure of fatal diseases is essentially a corporate endeavor involving both the patient and the physician.
I am grateful to the distinguished medical personalities of the various countries, mentioned in the text, with whom I had discussions on varied topics which indeed proved valuable in preparing this book. Still more, I am indebted to Lord Walton(UK.) for kindly writing the foreword of this book, and who has been a guiding spirit for more than three decades in my mission.
I also owe thanks to various outstanding bodies/personalities like the WHO, the UN, the President of the Swiss Confederation, the Counselor of the Government of Romania etc. for showing a keen interest in disseminating information regarding this book.
I am equally grateful to my various friends both in India and abroad who have helped me in this task at its various stages.
