I am happy to place the present volume (South Indian Inscriptions, Volume XXXVI) edited by Prof. P. Shanmugam, University of Madras, Chennai, in the hands of scholars This type of editing of S.I1 volumes by non-departmental scholars is the result of initiation by Dr. T. S. Ravishankar, former Director (Epigraphy) I/c, with a view to bringing out the unpublished materials to light. Prof. P. Shanmugam, an established erudite scholar of international reputation has done this voluminous and strenuous work, just for his passion to Epigraphy. I am extremely happy to record that amidst many academic assignments and preoccupations, he could complete this volume. I am highly grateful to him for this endeavour.

My thanks are also due to Dr. T. S. Ravishankar, former Director (Epigraphy) I/c, who, during his tenure took initiative to assign the job of editing to non-departmental scholars with a view to bring out vast epigraphical material to light. I thank Dr. S. Swaminathan, former Deputy Superintending Epigraphist, for his kind coordination in editing the volume.

I am deeply beholden to our Director General, ASI, for having given permission for this assignment to Prof. P. Shanmugam. My thanks are due to Sri P. Balamurugan, Assistant Epigraphist (Tamil) who took the responsibility of overseeing the composing of the materials and sometimes he himself composed many critical symbols and helped office in many respects in bringing out this volume. I also thank Sri G. Srinivasa Rao, Sr. Photographer and Sri G. Vasantha Kumar, Photographer Gr. II for preparing illustrations for this publication.

I thank the Manager and his colleagues of Tamil Nadu Government Press, Chennai for neatly printing and bringing out this volume on time.
