Book Description
Foreword

The book contains 23 Essays as listed in the contents. Not many attempts have been made by Geographers to portray the geo-political problems of India from an Afro-Asian view point. In these Essays an effort is made to discuss Indian political problems in the context of power politics and political pressures in a divided world.

Greater emphasis has been given in the Essays to the frontier lands of the sub- continent of India and the significance of the sea in the Political Geography of India. As such the strategic value of the North Western and Baluchistan Frontiers (now in Pakistan), Kashmir and the North Eastern Frontiers has been elaborated more particularly and with a physico historical analysis in order to bring out the geo- political significance of the British Indian boundaries. The Northern Frontiers are studied in the context of the Chinese aggression of 1962. The historical and physical background of the sub-continent, its economic strength, the special problems of the North Eastern Frontier lands, its geo-economic and social problems are also given some attention against the background of a divided India. The significance of the Indian Ocean is discussed in the context of its relationship with the greater Afro-Asian land mass and the interest of the super-Powers in controlling the sea lanes of the world. The opening Essay on Mackinder's Heartland Theory and the concluding Essays on World Politics and Non-alignment bring out the strategic value of the sub-continent in world politics. The internal political problems of India, State and party politics etc. are not dealt with in these Essays as they form a different subject altogether and would require a different approach. It is hoped that these Essays would prove useful in understanding at least to some extent India's political and defence problems in a world of super-Powers and ambitious nations.
