The Council of the Asiatic Society created Mm. Haraprasad Sastri Research Fellowship in the year 1967 and Pandit Jadabendra Nath Ray was appointed Research Fellow in the year 1971. He edited 'Shraddhadipa' by Acharyya-Dibyasingha Mahāpātra, a seventeenth century Orissan Smriti Text on funerary rites and ceremonies, with an exhaustive commentary entitled 'Prabha.'
I am now glad to present this treatise before the scholarly world interested in the old Smriti Text of Orissa.
Sräddhadipa of Sri Divbasingha Mahapatra is a late seven- teenth century Orissan Smrti text on funerary rites and ceremonies and other ancillary topics, which still have "currency in the social life of Orissa as well as among the Orissan residents of the contiguous West Bengal districts of Midnapur, Bankura and Purulia. Hence the preparation of a correct edition of this hitherto unpublished text received the attention of the Society. That was assigned to the Mm. Haraprasad Shastri Research Fellow Pandit Jadavendranath Roy Tarkatirtha, Retired Principal of Cooch Behar Government Sanskrit College. It is a matter of gratification that the scholar has faithfully done his job collating the available palm leaf manuseripts, two copies of which are preserved in the Orissa State Museum, Bhuvanesvar. An exhaustive commentary entitled 'Prabha' by the scholar has enhanced the value of the treatise.
