Shah Jahan, the fifth of the Great Mughals, was the son of Jahangir, but a favourite of his grandfather, Akbar the Great. The period of his reign was the golden age of Mughal art and architecture and he built many monuments, including the Taj Mahal, one of the seven wonders of the world, in memory of his beloved wife, Mumtaz Mahal. Shah Jahan was an able ruler an efficient administrator and aimed at spreading the Mughal Empire. But this great ruler, in his last days, was captured and imprisoned by his own son, Aurangzed.
