The Seven Principal Musical Notes of the Hindus, with their Presiding Deities were composed in celebration of the birth-day of Her Most Gracious Majesty, the Empress of India by Sangita-Nayaka, Rajah Sir Sourindro Mohun Tagore, knight of the United Kingdom of Great Britain in Ireland. These music pieces were an address to Empress Victoria.

Agni, Brahma, Sarasvati, Vishnu, Ganesa, Mahadeva and Suryya are respectively said to be the presiding deities of the Musical notes, Sharja, Rishabha, Gandhara, Madhyama, Panchama, Dhaivata and Nishada. To these notes belong the respective poetical metres anushtup, Gayattri, Tristup, Brihati, Pautki, Ushnik and Jagati.

The author sang them to the accompaniment of the Vina. Accosted thus, the Goddess of poetry invoked the aid of the deities who preside over the Seven Musical Notes, and with the help of the metre that appertains to each, and the soul-entrancing melodies and measures, composed some strains which the Goddess of Music began to sing, scattering sweetness all around.
