The word meaning of gem is good or precious. So the word gem always means good. The gems used for wearing and for ornamental purpose are of two types- mineral gems and sea gems. Mineral gems are got from the mines. There are many chemical particles in deep-earth. In variable temperature conditions, there are always taking place many chemical reactions inside the earth. As a result of these reactions, different gems are built viz., Diamond, Ruby, Blue Sapphire, Emerald, Topaz, Zircon, Cat's eye, Mineral gems etc.

The second category is of sea gems which are evolved through various sea creatures. These are only two- Coral and Pearl. These are built by organisms of sea. According to ancient books, these gems and semi-gems are eighty four in total and in these, nine are important- Ruby, Pearl, Coral, Diamond, Emerald, Blue Sapphire, Yellow Sapphire, Zircon and Cat's eyes and the rest are semi-gems, but there are other semi-gems also.

In short, not going in deep, we can say that the gems. are used in two ways. Firstly, gems al e used in ornaments for style and fashion. Secondly, these are important, according to astrology. It is believed that all these gems, semi-gems and Rudraksha etc. belong to different divine powers and are helpful in averting obstacles.

It is definite that gems are able to conquer bad or evil influences. Ayurveda also agrees with this theory. According to Ayurveda, the ashes and the remains of gems are useful in different diseases. In short, there is a certain influence of Yantra, Mantra, Medicine, Gem and Rudraksha on human body.
