Commencing 1995, there was a strong urge in me to be of some use to Casey on the thought got strengthened after my retirement from service in 1986. To do some service to the society was due to my orientation from high school days. I studied in Sri Ramakrishna Vidyalaya and then in Vivekananda College. Some Asanas and rudiments of meditation was taught and I continue these sadhanas. I am beneficiary of these practices, physically and mentally. These benefits, I thought, should be extended to whosoever desire. To expand my horizon of knowledge and skills, came opportunities to get trained in established yoga centres and ashrams. The subjects were meditation, asanas and pranayama. The knowledge base got reinforced by yoga literature of Swami Vivekananda, Swami Sivananda, Shri Aurobindo and B.K.S. Iyengar and few others. This base gave me confidence to commence Yoga training courses. My long cherished mission. slowly got materialised. Therefore Yoga Asanas, meditation and pranayama were chosen for the course offerings. Yoga being a sacred science, I strongly felt it should not be commercialised and be completely free of any charges.
Started with a limited group of participants, opportunities enlarged to encompass a very vast circle of participants, consisting of household members, school and college students, bank employees, corporate executives, para medicals, police personnel and wide assortment of people. The total strength exceeded over 12,000. At no point of time advertisement was sought for, all by word of mouth. The course offerings were reformulated and refined from time to time based on feedback from participants.
Fairly, a large segment of the trainees were young school and college students. They were eager to know why of Yoga? How does it benefit? And what is the science behind it? Group discussions and feedback schedules increasingly focussed on these questions. This made me to reorient my approach and delivery on the three chosen subjects to be more science- oriented. Gaining additional knowledge became a necessity on my part. Yoga literature collection gained momentum. My interaction with knowledgeable personnel on yoga was of immense support in this venture of knowledge-enriching experience, besides practical orientation.
