Book Description
About the Book

The deliberation of the Seminar centered round a most significant and rather neglected field of Science and Technology in Sanskrit.

Modern Scientists are not aware of the presence of vast literature in Sanskrit on Science and technology. The absence of scholarship in Sanskrit held them back from exploring scientific wisdom in the ancient language. The Sanskrit scholars are not competent to study and impart it to the world of scientists. Hence a dialogue between these two groups is very much essential. They should undertake continious and conscious efforts to explore this major chunk of technical literature in Sanskrit or the welfare and betterment of the mankind. The present volume is a humble attempts in this direction. 27 papers presented in the seminar are included in this book.

Preface

I have great pleasure to place this volume in the hands of scholars. This anthology of research papers is the outcome of a significant National Seminar conducted by the Dept. of Sanskrit Sahitya, Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit, Kalady, on 'Sanskrit is Technological Age' in the month of October 2001.

Generally Sanskrit studies are confined to Vedic and Classical Literature. Epics, Alamkarasastra, Vyakarana Darsana and the like. Modern scientists are not aware of the presence of vast literature in Sanskrit on Science and technology. The mere Sanskritists. Hence a dialogue between these two groups is very much essential. They should undertake combined and conscious effort to explore this major chunk of technical literature in Sanskrit, for the welfare of mankind. We know that we have dead elements in our tradition. They should be discarded. But there are several living and shining elements too in the tradition, which may be accepted with both hands for the advancement of humanity. A few studies have come out in this field. But must of them deal the subject in general. The present volume deals with many a topics in detail and also dwell deep in the subject concerned. The seminar had six sessions namely - (1) Indian Mathematics (2) Indian Architecture (3) Environmental Wisdom of Ancient India (4) Ancient Indian Medical System (5) Social Sciences and Sanskrit literature (6) Ancient India Jurisprudence.

There are 27 papers in the present volume. The papers deal with various branches of ancient scientific wisdom of India. The 'Introduction' of this book is the inaugural talk delivered in the Seminar by Dr. K. Gopalan, the former Vice Chancellor of Cochin University of Science and Technology. We are highly indebted to him for his scholarly presentation. Prof. Abhidhana Rajendra Mishra, a well-known poet and former Vice Chancellor of Sampoornananda Sanskrit University, Varanasi delivered the keynote address covering all major areas of scientific literature in Sanskrit. We express our gratitude to Prof. Mishra. Three seniors scholars Dr. K. Kunjunni Raja, Dr. K. V. Sharma, and Dr. N. V. K. Warrier who contributed papers and presided various sessions of the Seminar, left us with in this period. Their learned guidance in various academic fields enriched the research activities of the Dept. we pay homage to the departed souls. Pro. K. N. Panikkar, the then Vice Chancellor was always an inspiration for organizing serious academic events. His scholarly advice and guidance helped the academic community of the University to attain better heights in advanced studies and research, in their respective fields. The Department of Sanskrit Sahitya could organize three major national seminars during his Vice Chancellorship. They are 'Sanskrit in Technological Age', Bhakti Movement and its impact of Indian culture' and 'Eco-Aesthetics and Sanskrit Literature'. I take this opportunity to express the indebtedness beyond words to Prof. K. N. Panikkar. Prof. N. P. Unni, former vice. Chancellor of the University gave valuable suggestions or bringing out the present volume. He enriched the volume with his learned paper.

This conference stressed the need to give preference to unpublished manuscript materials in Technical Literature, to be published with suitable commentary. They are kept in oblivion, untouched by the reading hands of inquisitive scholars. The attention of young researchers should be invited to this worthwhile aspect rather than dealing with aspect of pure literature already been dealt with several times and in different languages.

I thank all the scholars who contributed papers in this volume I thank all my colleagues in the department and University who directly or indirectly helped the Department to organize the seminar and to bring out this volume. Last but not the least, I express my thanks to Dr. N. K. Sundareswaran, Senior Lecture in the Dept. who assisted me in editing the present volume.

The Dept. also express it's gratitude to New Bharatiya Book Corporation. New Delhi, or publishing the book in a befitting manner.
