About The Book

"Rock Art and Archaeology of India" is a commemoration volume of articles, compiled in honour of Prof. Shankar Prasad Tiwari, a well known and pioneer in rock art research, cultural geography, archaeology and natural history. He discovered the Kutumsar Cave and vanishing subterranean biological species in Bastar and rock art sites in the Betwa source region. The articles published in this book are diverse, incorporating various fields of his engagement including rock art, numismatics, temple architecture, chalcolithic, neolithic culture etc. in Central India. Also included in this book is a selection of published and unpublished articles of Prof. Shankar Tiwari. About the Author

Dr. Kalyan Kumar Chakravarty
An MPA and Ph.D from Harvard University, Dr. Kalyan Kumar Chakravarty is a renowned art historian and museologist. An IAS of the 1970 batch, he has combined innovative initiatives in bio-cultural diversity, non formal education and conservation with extensive fieldwork and publications in archaeology, intangible heritage, rock art, art history and a new community museum movement in India.
As Member Secretary, Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts, Dr. Chakravarty has launched a nationwide interdisciplinary project for survey, documentation, dating and conserva tion of rock art.
Dr. Gyani Lal Badam
Dr. Gyani Lal Badam, a leading quaternary geologist and palaeonto logist, has done pioneering research on taphonomy, palaeoenironment, bio stratigraphy and rock art. He has been a member of the faculty of Deccan College, Pune, Rashtriya Manav Sangrahalaya, Bhopal and the Directorate of Culture and Archaeology in Raipur. A senior consultant at the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts, he is directing field research in ethno-archaeology, cultural heritage, prehistoric rock art etc.

Preface

The Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Manava Sangrahalaya Bhopal planned to publish a Commemoration Volume in honour of Prof Shankar Prasad Tiwari, bringing out the diverse dimensions of his personality as revealed in different academic forums, investigations, debates and field surveys. Very good response was received from students, colleagues and admirers of Prof. Shankar Tiwari, and this project has now taken shape in the form of a book Rock Art & Archaeology of India.
The present volume is divided into four parts. The first part deals with biographical sketch of Prof. Shankar Tiwari and dedications received from his close friends and family members, recollecting many facets of his personality. It also includes a number of photographs of Prof. Shankar Tiwari, as a student and teacher, with scholars, dignitaries, tribal families and field researchers. The second part of the volume contains research articles contributed by scholars on rock art and painted rock shelters, temples. art and architecture, chalcolithic and neolithic cultures, ancient coins, subterranean caves, conservation, all of which were Prof. Tiwari's concems. In the third part, selected works of Prof. Shankar Tiwari, published and unpublished, are included. In this there are reminiscences written by Prof. Trwari as a faculty member of the Geography Deptt. Nagpur and his works on rock paintings of Chiklod. Gupteswara temple. Kutumsar caves, coins, natural history of marble rocks of Jabalpur, waterfalls of Tirathgarh and Chitrakote, etc.
The publication starts with a biographical sketch of Prof. Shankar Tiwari and his manifold interests as a student, faculty member, researcher, Director of Tourism and his discoveries, particularly, in the S-belt of rock shelters in Madhya Pradesh, the Kutumsar caves, now in Chhattisgarh, and other aspects of archaeology. Photographs show Prof. Tiwari delivering lectures in seminars, at excavation sites with Dr. G.L. Badam, with tribal boys and with dignitaries like Acharya Vinobha Bhave, Shri Vidya Charan Shukla, Shri Shyama Charan Shukla, Dr. D.P. Mishra, Dr. S.K. Pandey and with his family members. The obituary written by Dr. Badam brings out the various facets of his composite personality. Smt. Pushpa Tiwari's (wife of Prof. Shankar Tiwari) talks about his discoveries and his collection of early coins from the Narmada Valley, which has recently been published by Dr. S.J. Mangalam and Mrs. Tiwari. Dr. Richu Tiwari (daughter) and Dr. Anurag Tiwari (son) pay tributes to their father in touching words.
