Book Description

Introduction

It is a matter of great pleasure for us (the trustees of the Maharajadhiraja Kameshwar Singh Kalyani Foundation) to bring out the third volume of Maharajadhiraja Kameshwar Singh Memorial Lecture Series. The Foundation was established in 1988-89, and then, after a few years, since 1996, we began to celebrate the birthday of the last Maharajadhiraja, Kameshwar Singh, of Darbhanga. On this occasion, we invite an eminent scholar to deliver the Maharajadhiraja Kameshwar Singh Memorial Lecture at Darbhanga. This activity of the Foundation is continuing so far in order to let the ideas and thoughts of the great intellectuals of India and abroad reach out to the public at large. The publication of the above mentioned series containing the memorial lectures was thus started in this context.

The lectures delivered from 1996-2006 have already been published in two volumes (Perspectives on Indian Society and History: A Critique, 2002, Manohar; India: Some Critical Questions, 2007, Maharajadhiraja Kameshwar Singh Kalyani Foundation). The present (third) volume includes the lectures delivered by Professor Manager Pandey (2007), Professor Uma Das Gupta (2007), Professor Muchkund Dubey (2009), Professor K.L.. Sharma (2010), Professor Dipankar Gupta (2011) and Professor Pradip Kumar Bose (2011). The text of the lecture delivered in 2008 by Professor Yogendra Singh is not yet available to us. So, we pro- pose to include it in the next (fourth) volume. We are immensely grateful to all the scholars who spared their valuable time considering quite sym- pathetically the mission of the Foundation.
