world today stands at crossroad. The human beings under severe strain are compelled to sit and reassess their own environments, socio-economic, political culture and future. Socialism, capitalism, mixed economy and even Marxism miserably failed in delivering the good for the people. People have no alternative except Gandhism. In fact the time has come to become less ideological and more action oriented.
The fact is that long before the people in 21st c century will be awakened to the perils and limits of unrestrained economic growth and technological innovations, Gandhiji pointed out the pitfalls of industrialism and the damage to nature and man. He strongly criticised the emerging trends of consumer culture in future in all sphere of life and emphasised austerity and the moral principle in development, which is essential for tomorrow's world. The challenges of present day world require total newness on all fronts and holistic analysis of the problems.
The book is not a simple interpretation of Gandhian thought and action. It is an interpretation of Gandhian ideas into contemporary forms, designs and direction. We have to interpret Gandhism in terms of new challenges and crises which are gift of urbanisation and globalisation to mankind. The most complete survey of the field of Gandhian thought and action by one of the holding scholars and activists, the book will serve the purpose by filling the gap.
I have received immense help and cooperation from various people in bringing out this volume. I shall be failing in my duty if I do not record my appreciation and few words for them.
