Foreword Dr. Bijit Das, M.S. (Shalya Tantra) is known to me since his undergraduate days as BAMS student to the present day. He is a very energetic, sincere & very convergent student in his own subject since his student life. It is matter of great pleasure to know that he has written this book on Rakta Mahatva.

Shalya Tantra discipline comprises of various valuable concepts of ancient surgical and par surgical procedures where Rakta has been identified as very prime element. This concept needs a revalidation& decoding in the present era of surgery for appropriate understanding.

In this context the applied anatomy, physiology, path physiology & management principles have been explained in a very simple manner for quick learning. And also the scientific explanation on the concept of bloodletting therapy has been given very nicely.

This book will be of immense value to the learners of Ayurveda in general & Shalya Tantra in particular. It will be a good reference & handbook for the entire Ayurvedic community. Preface Many valuable points are available in the Ayurvedic texts concerning the importance of Rakta.An Ayurvedic scholar should know the Rachana Sharir, Kriya Sharir, Rakta Vigunata and its consequences along with Chikitsa Sutra to overcome different difficulties which may be faced during practicing common Surgical & Para surgical procedures. A Scholar of Ayurveda also should have a clear concept about the relevant points as described for Rakta in different texts. The main object of writing on this topic is also to rehabilitate faith in clinical usefulness of the knowledge as narrated in great treatises of Ayurvedic literature. Rakta is considered as fourth pillar for maintaining normal anatomy & physiology of body along with other three dosha by Chary Sushrut. As Sushrut has uttered many times about importance of Rakta when explaining the management principles for different ailments .Thus with the aim to elaborate the things on scientific background, the authors wish to present this book in the hands of erudite learners of Ayurveda with the submission that if they suggest few more relevant information’s which need incorporating in the text of this book shall be always welcomed for future editions.
