About The Book

Rabindranath Tagore's world of art often appears to be as much an enigma to the uninitiated as it is a source of visual and intellectual contentment for the trained eye. Rabindranath Tagore: His World of Art is a window to Tagore's school of aesthetics and his artistic inheritance. It traces the line of development of his visual sensibilities as well as his understanding and use of texture, colour and tone-both in the realms of art and literature. Besides, the book features Tagore's work in the context of German Expressionism, his interaction with artists from across the shores and explains his role in the evolution of modern art in India with special reference to the induction of his aesthetic sensibilities into Santiniketan.

About the Author

Supriya Roy has worked in Rabindra Bhavana, the Tagore Archives and. the Research Centre of Visva-Bharati, Santiniketan, as a librarian and archivist for three decades. She has been series editor for the Tagore Travelogues for Visva-Bharati and has edited many other books on Tagore. In 2011, she curated an exhibition on Rabindranath in Kuala Lumpur.

Sushobhan Adhikary, artist, art historian and art-restorer, is at present curator of the Kala-Bhavana Museum at Visva-Bharati. He has spent long years in Rabindra-Bhavana as conservator of Rabindranath's paintings. Sushobhan has been writing extensively on Indian art and on the art of Rabindranath in particular since 1983. Along with Supriya Roy, he has organised the gallery on Rabindranath in Mauritius and, in 2000, they jointly curated an exhibition of paintings by Rabindranath at the National Gallery of Modern Art, Mumbai.

Introduction

The years 2011 to 2012 have seen a spate of books on the paintings of Rabindranath Tagore. Visva-Bharati's Rabindra-Chitravali, edited by the art historian Professor Sivakumar, has filled a lacuna in Tagoreana. Very few have had, so far, the privilege of viewing Rabindranath's works in totality.
